NTSA Introduces Instant Vehicle Ownership Transfers via eCitizen Platform
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has launched a fully digital system for motor vehicle ownership transfers, enabling seamless transactions through the eCitizen platform. This upgrade eliminates the need for manual paperwork and multiple visits to NTSA offices, streamlining the process for both buyers and sellers.
To initiate a transfer, the current vehicle owner logs into their eCitizen account, selects the vehicle, uploads the logbook, and submits the buyer’s details. The buyer then receives a prompt to approve or reject the transfer electronically. The system’s enhanced efficiency, with fewer internal checks, allows applications to be finalized in minutes.
Upon confirmation, a new logbook is generated within three working days. Buyers can collect it from their chosen NTSA center by presenting the old logbook and original identification documents. Each application generates a unique reference number, enabling real-time tracking of progress for both parties. The system also maintains a digital audit trail for every stage, promoting accountability and reducing fraudulent activities.
If an application is rejected, the seller receives an immediate SMS notification detailing the reason, allowing corrections and resubmission without additional fees. NTSA emphasized that all transactions must occur through official digital channels and strongly advised against paying bribes to facilitate transfers. The Authority also reminded motorists that driving a vehicle registered under the previous owner’s name beyond 14 days without completing the transfer violates the Traffic Act.
To ensure transparency, NTSA encourages prospective buyers to verify the vehicle’s ownership by conducting a search on the NTSA portal before finalizing a purchase. The Authority further urged the public to report any attempts to fast-track or influence transfers through unofficial channels to the nearest NTSA office or the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for investigation.
This shift to a fully online platform aims to enhance service delivery, increase transparency, strengthen security, and ensure compliance with road traffic laws, benefiting Kenyans nationwide.
