EPRA Shuts Down 12 Fuel Stations for Selling Adulterated and Export-Bound Fuel
The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has closed 12 fuel stations across Kenya for selling adulterated or export-bound motor fuels in the local market, as part of its ongoing efforts to protect consumers and enforce fuel quality standards.
The closures stem from inspections conducted between July and September 2025, during which EPRA carried out 6,090 tests at 1,315 petroleum outlets nationwide. The results showed that 1,303 stations, or 99.09 percent, complied with regulations. However, 12 stations failed to meet the required standards and were immediately ordered to halt operations.
The affected fuel stations include:
-
Riva Petroleum Bahati Service Station in Nakuru
-
Kambero Filling Station in Kisumu
-
King Size Filling Station in Machakos
-
Dala Energy Filling Station in Makueni
-
Sasa Filling Station in Bungoma
-
Noble Energy Filling Station in Vihiga
-
Belstar Filling Station in Nyandarua
-
George Kamau Filling Station in Kwale
-
Vipringo Service Station in Kilifi
-
Midtown Filling Station in Meru
-
Gateway Inn Filling Station in Mombasa
Violations identified during the inspections included selling diesel with excessive sulphur content, mixing fuel with kerosene, and distributing products intended for export. EPRA highlighted that Gateway Inn and Vipringo Service Stations were repeat offenders, having been previously cited for similar violations.
To maintain the integrity of Kenya's fuel supply, EPRA has encouraged the public to report suspected cases of fuel adulteration. Reports can be submitted through the authority's hotline, USSD code *363#, or via SMS to 40850. These measures are critical to safeguarding motorists and ensuring confidence in the country's fuel quality standards.
EPRA remains committed to regular monitoring and enforcement to uphold compliance and protect consumers from substandard fuel products.
