On July 22, 2025, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kenya launched a new WhatsApp number, 0709570000, to enable the public to share crime-related information anonymously. This initiative, announced during the relaunch of the Fichua Kwa DCI Call Centre at the DCI Headquarters on Kiambu Road, Nairobi, aims to enhance citizen participation in crime prevention both locally and internationally. The event was attended by notable figures, including Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, British High Commissioner to Kenya Neil Wigan, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Deputy Inspector General of Administration Police Service Gilbert Masengeli, and DCI Director Mohamed Amin.

The new WhatsApp line complements the existing toll-free hotline, 0800 722 203, and offers a secure and discreet communication channel for reporting criminal activities. Director Mohamed Amin emphasized that the platform is designed to foster a stronger partnership between the DCI and the public, describing it as a symbol of their commitment to improving security through cooperation with citizens. The initiative is part of the broader Fichua Kwa DCI campaign, originally launched in December 2020, which encourages Kenyans to report suspicious activities to enhance national security.

The relaunched Fichua Kwa DCI platform includes a modernized call center equipped with advanced communication infrastructure, such as a power backup inverter and a dedicated recovery server, to ensure uninterrupted service delivery. The upgrade was supported by a partnership with the United Kingdom government, which provided advanced technology transfer and specialized training for DCI officers. Interior CS Murkomen praised this collaboration, noting its importance in enhancing Kenya’s policing capabilities and contributing to a safer global community.

Murkomen highlighted the significance of the initiative in rebuilding public trust in the National Police Service and the DCI. He acknowledged past incidents that have created suspicion and a gap between the police and the public, emphasizing that the revamped platform aims to create a transparent and trustworthy environment. The anonymous reporting feature ensures that informants are protected, encouraging more Kenyans to share critical information without fear of retaliation. Murkomen stated that the goal is to foster a sense of ownership among Kenyans, enabling them to work closely with the police to maintain national security.

The DCI continues to urge the public to utilize both the WhatsApp number and the toll-free hotline to report any criminal activity, reinforcing the collective responsibility to keep Kenya safe. The introduction of this new reporting channel is expected to significantly improve the DCI’s ability to gather intelligence and act swiftly on crime reports, ultimately contributing to a safer and more secure nation.
