Citizenship Rights in Africa Initiative (CRAI)
The Citizenship Rights in Africa Initiative (CRAI) is a pivotal resource for legal professionals, advocates, and policymakers addressing nationality and statelessness issues across the African continent. Launched to promote the fundamental right to a nationality, CRAI provides an extensive database containing over 4,000 items as of September 2020, including national laws, government reports, academic articles, and news updates on citizenship and statelessness. The initiative highlights significant developments, such as the adoption of the Protocol to the African Charter on Nationality by the African Union on February 18, 2024, and Cameroon's Law No. 2024/016, passed on December 23, 2024, which legally recognizes customary marriages to enhance protections for couples. Hosted by the International Refugee Rights Initiative and maintained by experts Bronwen Manby and Djibril Balde, CRAI collaborates with a network of organizations and individuals committed to ending statelessness. The initiative also partners with prominent groups like Minority Rights Group International, Equality Now, and the Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa, focusing on marginalized communities, women’s rights, and access to justice. CRAI’s work supports legal advocacy by offering resources to challenge discriminatory laws and practices, ensuring compliance with international human rights standards. For law firms and practitioners specializing in human rights and immigration, CRAI serves as an invaluable tool for research, policy development, and strategic litigation to uphold citizenship rights across Africa.
