Kenya and Ethiopia Sign Landmark Free Trade Agreement to Boost Regional Economic Growth

Kenya and Ethiopia have signed a landmark agreement to facilitate free cross-border trade, aiming to boost economic growth and regional integration. The deal, formalized during a Joint Ministerial Commission meeting in Nairobi, establishes a framework for seamless movement of goods, services, and investments between the two nations. It includes measures to eliminate trade barriers, harmonize customs procedures, and enhance cooperation in sectors such as agriculture, energy, and manufacturing. Kenyan Trade Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya hailed the agreement as a step toward unlocking the economic potential of the region, emphasizing its role in creating jobs and fostering innovation. Ethiopian State Minister for Trade, Kassahun Gofe, echoed these sentiments, noting that the agreement aligns with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) objectives to promote intra-African trade. The pact also addresses challenges like non-tariff barriers and infrastructure gaps, with both countries committing to joint projects to improve transport and logistics networks. Additionally, the agreement promotes digital trade and e-commerce, aiming to integrate small and medium enterprises into the regional market. This development is expected to strengthen bilateral ties and serve as a model for other East African nations seeking to enhance trade cooperation.
