Lawsuit Challenges Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika’s Eligibility Over Alleged U.S. Citizenship
A fresh petition filed in the High Court in Nakuru seeks to remove Governor Susan Kihika from office, alleging she holds dual citizenship, which violates Article 78(2) of the Kenyan Constitution. The petitioner, Nakuru voter Peter Kuria Mwaniki, claims Kihika served as an Assistant District Attorney in Dallas County, Texas, a position reserved for U.S. citizens, pointing to her past legal career in the United States as evidence.
Kihika, the first female governor of Nakuru, has faced scrutiny over her prolonged absence from office earlier this year, which she attributed to maternity leave in the U.S. after delivering twins. Her political career includes roles as Nakuru County Assembly Speaker, Senator, and now Governor, elected in 2022 on a United Democratic Alliance ticket. The lawsuit adds to ongoing legal and political challenges, including disputes over the Nakuru War Memorial Hospital takeover and a contempt of court case.
The petition argues that Kihika’s alleged U.S. citizenship disqualifies her from holding public office in Kenya. The High Court’s ruling could have significant implications for her governorship and Nakuru’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
