Legal Resources Foundation Trust

Established in 1993, the Legal Resources Foundation Trust (LRF) is a national civil society organization dedicated to promoting access to justice for vulnerable, indigent, and marginalized groups in Kenya. Initially operating under the Kenya Human Rights Commission due to registration challenges, LRF became an independent trust in August 2000. The organization's mission is to serve as a premier bridge to justice institutions, fostering collaborative partnerships to achieve justice, equity, and resilience within communities.

Over its 28-year history, LRF has been instrumental in advancing legal inclusivity, leading to statutory-supported legal aid and the integration of human rights in actualizing the Bill of Rights, particularly socio-economic and cultural rights as outlined in Article 43 of the Kenyan Constitution. The foundation employs various approaches, including the paralegal approach, human rights-based development programming, capabilities approach, and practice advocacy approach, to enhance access to justice.

LRF's governance structure comprises a seven-member Board of Trustees with expertise in education, media, finance, management, legal, and human rights sectors. The day-to-day operations are managed by an Executive Director, supported by a secretariat. The organization operates in 16 counties across Kenya, collaborating with volunteer lawyers, teachers, and paralegals who work alongside county administrations, the Kenya Prisons Service, the judiciary, the National Police Service, the Probation and Aftercare Department, and local communities.

Through its commitment to legal inclusivity and human rights, LRF envisions a just and equitable society, continually working towards empowering communities and ensuring justice for all.
