A businessman appeared in a Nairobi court on Monday charged with allegedly threatening to kill Samburu Nominated Senator Hezena Lemaletian.

Alex Anyolo Kikuyu was arraigned before the Chief Magistrate at Milimani Law Courts. He denied the allegations of issuing death threats against the senator.

The threats were reportedly sent through WhatsApp to the senator while she was in her office at Bunge Towers. The incidents allegedly occurred on January 27, 2026.

Senator Lemaletian reported the matter to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations at Muthaiga in Nairobi last week. Detective George Ndung’u from the Serious Crimes Unit led the investigation, which resulted in the businessman’s arrest.

During the operation, police recovered 23 Safaricom SIM cards, 10 Airtel SIM cards, three mobile phones, and a motor vehicle with registration number KBJ 795Q from the accused.

The investigating officer told the court that the suspect had no fixed abode and was living in his motor vehicle. However, Anyolo Kikuyu strongly disputed this claim. He described himself as a married man with two children and said he resides in Buruburu, Nairobi. He added that he is not a wanderer and does not live like a bird in a nest.

The magistrate observed that the accused appeared to be a person of means and not someone who would reside in a vehicle.

In his defense, Anyolo Kikuyu told the court he did not threaten to kill the nominated senator. He stated he has no interest in Samburu County politics and is instead concerned with politics in Kakamega County, where he comes from.

The chief magistrate ruled there was no reason to detain him in custody, noting that electronic devices could undergo forensic analysis without requiring his imprisonment. He was released on a bond of 20,000 shillings.

The case will be mentioned in two weeks for further directions.
