Judicial Service Commission of Kenya (JSC)
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) of Kenya, established under Article 171 of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and operationalized by the Judicial Service Act No. 1 of 2011, is a pivotal institution tasked with promoting the independence, accountability, and transparency of the Judiciary. Its mandate, as outlined in Article 172, includes facilitating efficient and effective administration of justice, recommending judicial appointments to the President, overseeing disciplinary actions for judicial officers, and ensuring continuous education and training for judges and staff through initiatives like the Kenya Judiciary Academy (KJA).
The JSC's vision is to be a commission of excellence in fostering an independent, transparent, and accountable Judiciary, while its mission focuses on capacity development and strategic partnerships to enhance judicial competence and accessibility. Led by a Chairperson (the Chief Justice) and composed of 11 members - including representatives from the judiciary, legal profession, and public - the Commission operates with a Secretariat to support its functions.
Recent activities underscore its commitment to justice and governance. The JSC has engaged in initiatives like the Annual High Court Summit to uphold human rights and has earned accolades, such as being 1st runners-up in the 2024 Financial Reporting (FiRe) Awards for excellence in financial reporting under the IPSAS Cash Basis category. Additionally, the JSC actively recruits for judicial positions, ensuring merit-based selections through its online jobs portal, and collaborates with stakeholders like the Nairobi National Government Administration to enhance access to justice across Kenya.
