HAKI Centre

The Haki Centre is a non-governmental human rights organization based in Kenya’s coastal region, dedicated to promoting social justice, constitutionalism, and good governance through community-driven initiatives. Established in 2006 by a group of passionate activists from the Coast and North Eastern Provinces, the organization was officially registered with the NGO board in 2012. Its mission centers on empowering communities to actively participate in sustainable development processes, ensuring equity, and advocating for rights-based approaches to governance. The Haki Centre operates across thematic areas like citizenship rights, land advocacy, peace-building, and social accountability, addressing systemic issues such as statelessness, land disputes, and historical injustices in the region.

The organization engages grassroots communities through projects like legal aid clinics, mobile birth registration drives, and peace education in schools, fostering tolerance and conflict resolution. It also collaborates with local and international partners, including UNHCR and the Kenya National Human Rights Commission, to tackle statelessness and enhance access to justice. As part of the Global Alliance Taskforce to End Statelessness (effective August 2022), the Haki Centre contributes to global efforts to resolve statelessness by September 2023. With a focus on empowering marginalized groups, including women and youth, the Haki Centre remains a vital advocate for justice and equity in Kenya’s coastal region, offering practical solutions to systemic challenges.
