Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR)
The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) is an independent constitutional body established under Article 59 of the Constitution of Kenya and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights Act No. 14 of 2011. As a watchdog institution, KNCHR is mandated to promote and protect human rights across Kenya. It monitors government institutions, investigates alleged human rights violations, and provides redress to victims where appropriate. Additionally, the Commission serves as an advisory body, offering recommendations to the Kenyan government on strengthening human rights frameworks and compliance with international standards.
KNCHR operates through several directorates, including Complaints and Investigations, Research, Advocacy and Outreach, Legal Services, Regional Services, and Corporate Services. The Commission maintains a nationwide presence with offices in Nairobi, Wajir, Kitale, Mombasa, Kisumu, Isiolo, Garissa, and Nyahururu. It adheres to the United Nations Paris Principles, ensuring its independence and credibility as a national human rights institution, and has been accredited as an ‘A status’ institution by the International Coordinating Committee of National Human Rights Institutions.
Beyond investigations, KNCHR engages in research, advocacy, and public education to foster a culture of human rights. It collaborates with stakeholders to monitor legislative compliance and provides leadership in moving Kenya toward a human rights-centered state. The Commission does not charge fees for its services, including recruitment processes, and encourages reporting of any extortion attempts.
