Kenya Revenue Authority

Established on July 1, 1995, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is the principal agency responsible for the assessment, collection, and accounting of all government revenues in Kenya. Operating under the mandate of the Kenya Revenue Authority Act, Chapter 469 of the laws of Kenya, KRA plays a pivotal role in the nation's economic development by ensuring effective revenue mobilization.

KRA's core functions include assessing, collecting, and accounting for all revenues as stipulated by law, advising on matters related to revenue administration, and performing other functions directed by the Minister.

The organization is structured into several key departments, each headed by a Commissioner:

a. Customs & Border Control Department (C&BC): Manages customs services and border control operations.

b. Domestic Taxes Department (DTD): Oversees domestic tax collection and compliance.

c. Intelligence & Strategic Operations Department (I&SO): Handles intelligence gathering and strategic operations.

d. Investigations & Enforcement Department (I&E): Conducts investigations and enforces tax laws.

e. Strategy, Innovation & Risk Management Department (SIRM): Focuses on strategic planning, innovation, and risk management.

f. Corporate Support Services Department (CSS): Provides corporate support services.

g. Legal Services & Board Coordination Department (LS&BC): Manages legal services and board coordination.

Additionally, KRA maintains the Kenya School of Revenue Administration (KESRA), a premier training institution specializing in Tax and Customs Administration, Fiscal Policy, and Management.

To enhance taxpayer compliance and service delivery, KRA has implemented an elaborate online portal, iTax, allowing citizens to file tax returns, check penalties, and apply for tax compliance certificates. This initiative aligns with the Kenyan government's efforts to automate service delivery through the e-Citizen platform, reducing the need for physical queues.

The Authority operates from its headquarters at Times Tower, Haile Selassie Avenue, Nairobi, Kenya, and maintains regional offices across the country to facilitate tax assessment and collection.
