The Office of the Attorney General and Department of Justice in Kenya is the principal legal advisor to the Government of Kenya. Established under Article 156 of the 2010 Constitution and the Office of the Attorney General Act 2012, it plays a critical role in facilitating good governance, upholding the rule of law, and promoting justice. The Office provides a wide range of public legal services, including legislative drafting, legal advisory, civil litigation, and international law matters. It also oversees key functions such as the registration of marriages, societies, adoptions, and coats of arms, alongside managing estates, trusts, and the Public Trustee services.
The Office is committed to protecting human rights and ensuring access to justice, particularly for the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable, through initiatives like the National Legal Aid Service. It also handles victim protection, compensation, and anti-corruption efforts via bodies like the Victim Protection Board and the National Anti-Corruption Campaign Steering Committee. The office supports the government’s development priorities, including the Big Four Agenda and Vision 2030, by aligning its legal services with national goals. With a vision to be the region’s leading institution in public legal services, it emphasizes integrity, transparency, and collaboration with justice sector stakeholders to foster a just and corruption-free society.
