Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP)

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in Kenya serves as the nation’s independent prosecuting authority, established under Article 157 of the Constitution and operationalized by the ODPP Act No. 2 of 2013. Headquartered in Nairobi with a presence across all 47 counties, the ODPP is led by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Renson M. Ingonga, appointed in September 2023. The office’s core mandate includes instituting and undertaking criminal proceedings, taking over or discontinuing cases, directing investigations, and advising government entities on criminal law matters. It also handles international legal cooperation, such as extradition and mutual legal assistance, while promoting policy reform and facilitating victims and witnesses during prosecutions.

Guided by a vision of delivering a just, fair, and people-centered prosecution service, the ODPP operates on principles of integrity, independence, transparency, and professionalism. Its services encompass efficient legal representation, a transparent complaints and compliments platform, compliance guidance, and specialized training programs through the Prosecution Training Institute. The ODPP also leverages systems like the Uadilifu Case Management System to streamline operations. Committed to inter-agency collaboration, it works with entities like the Judiciary and Independent Policing Oversight Authority to ensure justice delivery. The office further engages in public sensitization on legal processes such as plea bargaining and diversion, reinforcing its role in upholding constitutional rights and fostering equitable justice.
